Climate Hazards
As our climate deteriorates, extreme climatic events such as floods, storms, wildfires, landslides, and heatwaves are becoming more common, with more and more people, places, and infrastructure vulnerable. Planning for the future must account for potential vulnerability to more frequent climate hazards. This course will explore the physical causes and consequences of climate hazards, examine the risk factors which leave people, places, and infrastructure vulnerable, and develope your ability to assess these risks with a view to adaption and mitigation.
Environmental Geospatial Data Analysis:
This course will introduce how to use geospatial data, with GIS software or Python code, for environmental analysis.

Geospatial Data in QGIS:
This course will introduce how to work with geospatial data using QGIS.
The first part of this course involves using some Python code in Jupyter Notebooks to familiarise yourself with the key concepts in working with geospatial data and GIS. Don’t worry - you don’t need to write, or even understand the Python code itself! It’s all pre-written; we’re just using this because it makes it a bit more interactive. You don’t need to install anything either, because it’s all run online on Google Colab - so all you need is a Google account, and you can open it on any internet connected device. A phone might be a bit small, though!
There are 10 Notebooks to work through. The first is just a written introduction - the other 9 contain code cells to run as well as the explanatory text.
The main content of the course involves working through a series of QGIS exercises on the topic of flooding in Ireland - gradually leading you from simple tasks to more advanced analysis.
Geospatial Data in QGIS course
Earth Science and Society:
This course introduces you to the key processes and materials in Earth science, and how these have influenced society. It considers the range and origin of Earth science materials, and will provide you with the skills to describe and analyse these materials and the knowledge to understand their development and meaning. Through exploration of the geological history of Ireland and beyond, you will consider the influence of geological processes and features on human geographic processes, including settlement patterns, agriculture, and economic activity.
Topics to be covered include the formation of the solar system and the Earth; the structure of the Earth and plate tectonics; igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, minerals, and processes; environments and landscapes; the fossil record and biogeography; economic geology, including mining and petroleum geology; and geoenvironmental engineering and management.
Earth Science and Society course
Landscape Evolution:
The surface of the Earth is not static, but is constantly changing. Understanding how landscapes form and evolve is fundamental to physical geography. This course explores the landforms that make up the solid surface of the Earth, the processes which form and shape them, and the concepts and techniques used to study landscape evolution through past, present, and future environmental change.
Topics to be covered include plate tectonic processes; weathering and erosion; sediment transport agents and processes; sedimentary deposition and lithification processes; landscapes in a range of settings, including upland, glacial, fluvial, coastal, arid, and karst environments; anthropogenic landscapes, and landscape evolution. Key techniques used to study landscapes and environments past and present will be introduced, including geospatial analysis, and laboratory examination of sediments and rocks from various settings.
